Packaging Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the design, development and implementation of Packaging solutions to meet customer needs.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

Packaging Design Gather information from the part suppliers or design release engineers (math data, sample parts) to begin the packaging design process.Support our customer by designing and developing packaging solutions. Solutions must consider the impact to:
  1. Packaging budget
  2. Line side ergonomics
  3. Material Handling (internal/external)
  4. Transportation
  5. Safety
  6. Production
  7. Part Quality
  8. Durability (low maintenance)
Once packaging is implemented, troubleshoot issues as they arise by observing line side use at production line or supplier and propose design modifications or process changes to solve the issue.

Packaging Testing

Conduct Packaging testing at an official packaging testing facility to ensure:
  1. Design will not cause part damage / quality issues
  2. Design will hold up over time to ensure maintenance and repair costs are minimized.
Packaging Proposal and Approval

Initiate packaging approval process through buy off meetings with stake holders (Concept, Prototype, Production 1st off).
  1. Follow up to ensure packaging proposals are reviewed in a timely manner
  2. Formulate business cases to determine best overall course of action when presented with different packaging options from different stakeholders.
Production Build Management
  1. Monitor the manufacturer of the production fleet of racks to ensure design requirements and dead lines are achieved. This includes trips to the manufacturer to review production process, quality of welds, adherence to customer standards and agreed upon rack specs and measurements.
  2. Conduct bids to award packaging business, following the request for quote process with prospective packaging manufacturers.
  3. Issue purchase requests to customer to award business and initiate manufacturing.
  4. Request transportation for completed packaging and update packaging inventories in database.
  5. Facilitate rack design change and reworking of rack fleets in conjunction with part engineering changes or line side process changes. This includes creating rework timing schedules and requesting transportation.
Database and Expendable Management
  1. Troubleshoot expendable issues to determine root cause and propose solutions. Respond to Material Planning, Material Handling, in regards to status of issues. Participate in weekly expendable meeting.
  2. Enter / upload data into Companies Logistics and Packaging database in relation to new vehicle models or ongoing changes. This data includes but may not be limited to the following; supplier information, delivery dock information, usage per vehicle information, packaging spec information, packaging inventory amount information, manufacturer information, production drawing information, standard pack ordering information.
  3. Provide feedback to logistics regarding packaging inventory impact of logistics changes by analysis of system days calculation.
  4. Confirm packaging quantities required for part suppliers based on their production, internal logistics and finished goods inventory plan.
  5. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education Requirements:

Bachelors Degree in Packaging or equivalent experience required

Additionally, a Business / Logistics Degree or diploma preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • 2+ years experience in a similar capacity, in the automotive or industrial sector is preferred.
  • Experience in returnable shipping rack design
  • Proficiency in using Auto-cad or Solid Works
  • Demonstrated Project Management skills
  • Logistics/Financial analysis and modeling experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
Other Skills and Abilities:
  1. Above average verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Ability to relate to persons at all corporate levels, with diverse educational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  3. Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information.
  4. Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
  5. Ability to create and present formal management presentations.
  6. Capacity to perform effectively under pressure in order to satisfy customer requirements.
  7. Ability to travel up to 25% Internationally and Domestic
